AH. But she’s still fucking racist. Racism isn’t a mental disorder. She just is.

Exactly. Her having a mental illness doesn’t excuse racist beliefs that were likely instilled in her.

If this is in fact the case, I’m sorry that she’s ill and I hope she gets the help she needs.

THAT SAID, her illness does not erase the context of her words.  Anti-Blackness is rampant in the Korean/Korean-American community, and Hyun’s words are a symptom of that larger problem.  Furthermore, Hyun’s words do not change the fact that people on Twitter actually flocked to her in support as a direct result of her words, or that others have showed their complacent, default racism by defending Hyun’s place in the Kpop world by diminishing it as “one person’s words.”
